Les Canadiens de Montreal. The city was at a standstill, the Bell Centre was buzzing, and I was in Sudbury hoping for something electric to bring joy to the Big Nickel.
Alas, the next few days will be a nail-biting thriller. After a 4-3 shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, the Habs are still waiting to clinch a playoff birth for the first time in four years.
A complicated playoff picture

The Original Six team built a bit of a cushion since the All-Star break putting together multiple winning streaks. However, after back-to-back losses coming against the Senators and Blackhawks, things get a bit tricky.
On the other side of it, Columbus has put together a streak of strong games to pull up behind the Habs. With the Blue Jackets trailing closely behind them, Montreal has to hope for either a loss or non-regulation win. If Columbus wins, well, Montreal are going to be holding their breath until Wednesday/Thursday.
The Demidov era has begun.

Making his NHL debut earlier than expected, Demidov had Montreal fans around the world on the edge of their seats in anticipation of tonight’s game. Last year’s fifth overall pick and arguably the most hyped-up prospect took his rookie lap, getting the game started. Luckily for them, they didn’t have to wait long for the action.
Six minutes into the game, the arena popped. With beautiful and fluid movement, the 19-year old sent a perfect pass in front of the net for a Newhook goal. Just seven minutes later, he put one to the back of the net.
He looked comfortable, quick, and strong throughout his first game. Unfazed by the Bell Centre’s atmosphere, the winger proved to the world that he’s ready. The kid’s got the goods.
What’s next?
With a day off, the Canadiens players and coach Martin St Louis have some preparing to do. Eyes will be on the Blue Jackets tomorrow night, and possibly wednesday for the Habs.
Try to keep your food down, and enjoy the ride.
